Smart Tall Buildings Symposium

The prospect of “living” architecture that learns from, engages with, and actively responds to human activity is now within our grasp. As more devices and technologies are connected with one another, the availability of real-time data has enabled new possibilities influencing how people interact with the built environment. Perhaps the greatest potential application of smart technologies lies within tall buildings, which, given their scale and urban impact, have much to gain from automated systems and services.

Throughout history, the public imagination has theorized on how integrated technologies can make our lives easier – doors opening on their own, cars driving themselves, and automatons performing our daily tasks – but the coming wave of innovation will take this line of thinking to the next level. As machine learning and artificial intelligence research takes shape, technology will not just react to human behavior, but detect patterns in it, learn from it, and make important decisions on our behalf.

In the context of tall buildings, smart technologies have a deep role to play in the critical systems that allow these immensely complicated buildings to function. On a large scale, the demand for high-performing buildings is greater than ever, from the perspective of environmental performance and operational efficiency. Smart buildings of the near future will make minute adjustments throughout the day to limit solar gain and admit daylight, optimize air flow, and dynamically adjust the behavior of elevators and escalators to meet demand and keep building populations moving. As buildings become taller and more complex, and their populations grow, the demand for personalization will be even greater. That means tall buildings will increasingly connect to occupiers through their electronic devices, providing seamless security clearance and customized transportation, lighting, and climate adjustments, balancing many thousands of personal preferences and decisions against the overall performance goals of the building.

The 2018 Smart Tall Buildings Symposium, organized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in conjunction with Schindler, will comprise a significant, stand-alone two-day program incorporated into the CTBUH 2018 Polycentric Cities Conference, taking place in the host city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Through exploration of new smart technologies, examination of real-world case studies and insights into future applications of intelligent architecture, this event will represent a pivotal moment which encourages and ignites innovation in the tall building industry.
