The planners of the great emerging cities of the 21st century recognize that commercial real estate alone is not enough to sustain a city and make it a global destination. Perhaps more than any other, Abu Dhabi has assertively courted cultural and educational institutions from around the world. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the most dramatic examples – the 24,000-square-meter facility is the largest art museum on the Arabian peninsula. It is recognizable for its massive “floating dome”, a web-pattered shape consisting of 7,850 aluminum stars of varying sizes, which tessellate over eight layers to create a perforated roof structure that allows sunlight through to the spaces below. At ground level, tidal pools pass through the galleries, creating a “museum in the sea” that also bridges the gaps between Eastern and Western art cultures. The spectacular engineering required to construct the dome and protect the artifacts from corrosive sea air, among other challenges, featured heavily in this one-of-a-kind program.
