Dubai has emerged as a global city in the last two decades. Many concepts will be discussed that helped contribute to this growth and to placemaking in Dubai. Speaker Introduction background, UAE, UK then UAE. Emirates Airlines and moving people. Old maps of Dubai. Freehold land ownership. Commercial pressures to increase density. Property as a store of wealth. Examples of places Jumeriah Road (by accident), City Walk (by design), Burj Khalifa (by design), Gold Souq (by accident).

CONCLUSIONS: Dubai like most cities has got accidental and designed places. We need to strike a balance between commercial pressure and maintaining architectural heritage and with it placemaking.
