Abu Dhabi is an emirate of islands, which have recently seen a wave of development, capitalizing on their natural assets in close proximity to the city’s historic core. Reem Island is home to Shams Abu Dhabi, a 135-hectare development designed to accommodate up to 100,000 residents. The entrance to the development is demarcated by the Sky and Sun Towers, the Arc at Gate Towers, and the spectacular Gate Residential Towers.
The Gate Towers, which received a CTBUH Excellence Award in 2013, allude to a future in which tall buildings appear at such density that many of the amenities of urban habitat on the ground can and should be replicated at height. While clearly symbolic as an ageless gesture of welcome to the broader Shams Abu Dhabi development, the towers also afford a sophisticated experience for inhabitants. The defining feature is the 300-meter-long, arcing skybridge that runs across the top of three towers, spanning 87 meters between the towers and cantilevering 45 meters from the easternmost tower.
