The scale of ambition associated with the Middle East is not confined to the skyline. It extends to the very idea of urban living itself. In 2008, Masdar City broke ground and embarked on a daring journey to develop the world’s most sustainable eco-city. The city, which combines ancient Arabic architectural techniques with modern technology and captures prevailing winds, is naturally cooler and more comfortable during the high summer temperatures. At the same time, Masdar City uses clean energy generated on site from rooftop solar technology and one of the largest photovoltaic installations in the Middle East. Within the city, the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA) HQ is the United Arab Emirates’ first Four Pearl building, as certified by the Abu Dhabi’s sustainable building ratings standard, Estidama. IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. The 32,000 square-meter complex, consisting of three interconnected buildings, work together to conserve energy and water and create shared space. Explore the complex and get a firsthand look at a critical component of the world’s most sustainable city.
